Pearls are graded on lustre, surface cleanliness, shape, size and color. Many sellers use a simple A to AAA scale: A is good, A+ is better, AAA is the finest. Understanding grading helps you compare value instead of just price.
What makes a pearl 'good'
- Lustre — the sharpness of the reflection; the single most important factor.
- Surface — fewer blemishes, spots and rings is better.
- Shape — the rounder the pearl, the rarer and higher the grade.
- Size — larger pearls are rarer at the same quality.
- Color and overtone — even, attractive body color with a pleasing overtone.
The A–AAA scale, honestly explained
- A grade — good lustre, some surface marks, slightly off-round. Great value for everyday wear.
- A+ grade — very good lustre, cleaner surface, near-round. A beautiful classic look.
- AAA grade — top lustre, clean surface, round or near-round. The finest, most premium pieces.
Grading is only as good as the grader
There is no single global grading authority — the scale means different things from different sellers. That's why you should buy from sellers who are transparent about their grades, offer certificates, and let you inspect the piece before paying.
