Cultured vs Natural Pearls — What's the Difference?
Pearl Education · July 29, 2026 · 4 min read
Every pearl is either natural or cultured. A natural pearl forms with zero human help; a cultured pearl forms when a farmer gently inserts an irritant and the mollusk does the rest. Both are 100% real pearls — the only difference is how the process started. Today, over 99% of pearls sold are cultured.
The difference, simply
- Natural pearls — formed entirely by chance in the wild. Extremely rare and extremely expensive.
- Cultured pearls — grown with a helping hand, but the nacre is natural. Genuine, lustrous, and affordable.
Why this matters to your wallet
Natural pearls are collector's items priced like fine art. Cultured pearls give you the same genuine beauty for a fraction of the cost. When a seller says 'real pearls,' they mean cultured pearls — and that's a good thing, because it's how pearls became accessible to everyone.
Do cultured pearls last?
Yes. With proper care, cultured freshwater pearls can last decades or a lifetime. The nacre is real, natural material — it doesn't peel or fade like imitation coatings. That's why a certified pearl necklace is a lasting piece, not a seasonal one.
